GIS & Mapping

Mapping and Geographical Information System (GIS) is located in the Planning/Engineering Department but is a very important tool to every department within the City. GIS mapping provides a visual display to virtually any geographic data relating to the City. GIS mapping is a relatively new tool that cities use to assist in both day-to-day operations and long term planning.

The City of Onalaska GIS employs a considerable amount of data that is created and managed by the La Crosse County Land Information Department. This data includes parcel data, street centerlines, hydrology and more. In addition to the data provided by La Crosse County, the City of Onalaska has created and maintains many other data layers, such as voting districts, utilities, park & recreation areas, and zoning districts to name a few. The City has also received data from outside data providers; these layers include a detailed tree inventory, digital USGS maps, and digital air photos with six-inch resolution. The City primarily uses ArcView for GIS activities and prints any custom made map to a large format color plotter. Please feel free to contact the City to find out if GIS can assist you.
